Automatic gate ram motors provide discrete driveway swing gate automation. While sliding gate motors are all the same design, swing gates can be automated by a variety of different motor types.
Rams are a great choice for residential gate automation as they're discrete, not the most expensive or the most labour intensive to install on a single swing or double swing gates.
Inside each operator housing is an electric motor and a hydraulic piston. The motor end of the housing is mounted to the static pillar or post the gate is hung on and the piston end is mounted to a bracket on the gate. The electric motor forces the hydraulic fluid to extend or retract the piston arm which pushes the gate closed or pulls it open.
Unlike underground gate motors where the force to open gates is applied in line with the hinge axis, this type of gate opener pushes or pulls the swing gate leaf much further from the hinge. This allows the motor to open and close swing gates with much less power thanks to the principle of leverage.
Electric gates using ram gate openers require careful installation to ensure there are no lateral forces on the piston arm as it travels in and out of the motors. However, they're robust and they operate quietly. As there are few mechanical moving parts, they're quite easy to maintain and are reliable methods of swing gate automation.
